Make it highstreet | The Golden Globes 2014

Hey, remember many thousands of years ago there was that thing called the 'Golden Globes 2014'? Yes, I know this post is horrendously late, I've been shoved full throttle back into uni work. Why oh why do they give you essays in January? Don't they know I've got award ceremonies to watch and pretty dresses to look at?!

Anyway, moving swiftly back to the Golden Globes. Hurray, I love the Golden Globes, they feel very shiny don't you think? So let's hop straight in at the deep end with my favourite dress of the night which belonged to the beautiful Emma Watson. Emma paired her backless Dior dress with a pair of cigarette trousers. I absolutely love it when ladies get away from the predictable dresses and this choice did it for me. Just like the People's Choice Awards there were loads of bright colours on show; Lupita Nyong'o looked gorgeous in Ralph Lauren, it was a potentially tricky colour but it just looked beautiful against her skin. I didn't even have that much of a problem with Lena Dunham's custard yellow dress - it takes bravery to rock custard.

The award organisers must have been giving a lot of 'plus ones' because the red carpet was chock full of expecting mums. They were all styled so well, I'm so glad pregnancy clothes are more fitted now, like Olivia Wilde's Gucci sequinned dress, rather than those horrible baggy sacks stylists used to make pregnant actresses walk around in a few years ago. Drew Barrymore looked bloomin' lovely in a floral number from Monique Lhuillier. I also really loved the unusual cut of Kerry Washington's dress, the add-on cape not only made her look well-proportioned but also nicely highlighted her baby bump - good combination.

As always there's some bad dresses. I was so disappointed in my favourite lady J-Law, her Dior dress wasn't awful by any stretch of the imagination but she normally dresses so well that it just didn't seem very her. I wasn't a fan of Julia Roberts shirt/dress/thing looked like she was attending the '97 Golden Globes rather than the 2014. My least favourite dress of the night belonged to Zoe Saldana, which I really couldn't believe. She looked beautiful as always but the dress looked like a wardrobe had thrown up on her. Just pick one style!!

So it's officially December. How did that even happen? I'm pretty sure it was only just my birthday and now it's already Christmas. I'm never ready for the winter months in any sense. For example, at the moment I have absolutely no food in my house, very few jumpers and one pair of shoes. If I was a hibernating animal, I would die.

Anyway I always feel like winter is quite a hard season to fashion up. I know you can go all out with layers and knitwear but when it really comes down to it you're just going to plonk on your same old winter coat and cover up all your hard outfit-planning work. That's why this season I really want to get into trousers. I usually just stick to my trusty black skinny jeans but that's getting thoroughly boring and difficult to smarten up or look interesting.

At the moment I'm totally loving peg leg, skinny fit trousers. They look really great in patterns or as a statement block colour (like the beautiful colbalt blue pair from Boohoo I've included below). I also think they're a great alternative to boring ol' denims especially in a season where (if you're anything like me) your obsession with keeping warm limits your outfit choices. I am desperately searching for the perfect pair that I think can work for me.

So here's a little collection of some of my faves from around the tinternet. I absolutely love the patterns on some of these espesh the bold zebra print of the River Island pair. Because I'm quite short I sometimes worry about bold patterns like that but I definitely want to go try them on in store. As we are entering the festive season I couldn't stop myself from including a sparkly sequin pair. Believe me you're about to see a whole heap of sequins this December!

Make It Highstreet | Halloween Idols - Emily/Corpse Bride

For me, halloween isn't complete without a good Tim Burton film. Growing up, 'Nightmare Before Christmas' was a staple in my video collection, I watched it obsessively (even though the oogie-boogie man terrified me). 

At first I thought about having Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas as one of my 'Halloween Idols' but then I started thinking about other Tim Burton animated characters and I thought of Emily from The Corpse Bride. Emily's clothes are really ethereal and although a wedding dress might not be great everyday wear for everyone (shame) the draped yet constructed style does make for good autumn-wear.

Blue isn't a colour I wear a lot of which is a bit of a shame really (must rectify that). There's so many different shade of blue and dark navy, like the colour of these shoes works really well in the colder months. Also I think darker or more extreme make up works better in the winter. In the summer the last thing I want is a load of make up sweating around on my face but when it's a bit more wintery why not try a more out-there lip colour?

If you are thinking of dressing up as Emily for halloween it seems like it's a pretty easy look. You could either do it a casual way with a drapey skirt and some blue eyeshadow or go all out using this tutorial! Whatever way it'd look pretty cool.

Make It Hightstreet | Halloween Idols - Morticia Addams

As I've said in previous posts, I've got a bit of a soft spot for halloween. So I thought this year I'd do a little mini-series of posts for the week leading up to the ghostly day focussing on those fashionistas that lurk among the classic halloween costumes. Taking their signature look and making them a bit more day to day and a bit more achievable.

First of my halloween idols is the first lady of creep herself, Morticia Addams. Morticia's clothes might seem a bit dated and dreary but I think she personifies halloween glamour. I try to wear a lot of black so for me this character is perfect. Her outfit choices are so interesting considering she has such a limited palette choice. The layering is perfect for the winter, it's too cold for a dress but whack on a detailed cardigan or cover-all and problem solved! Plus chunky rings and over-zealous accessories are always a winner in my book, especially in the winter when I always feel like my wardrobe has got a little bit drab.

Moriticia's outfits probably are a bit too costume-y for day to day wear but her make-up could definitely be used as inspiration for a night-out look. A dark smokey eye and classic red lip are a go-to look and there's about 1000 tutorials online for them (maybe don't mention the Addams family if someone compliments you on how glam you look...). I've included GOSH black eyeshadow just because I used to love doing a super simple smokey eye with it and Kate Moss lipstick because they're just awesome!

You old tartan!

Tartan is set to be a masssssive trend for winter! Everywhere I seem to go I see it and the worst thing is...I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I'm a massive sucker for the original red tartan pattern but also absolutely love the dark green style I've seen about on the high street.

Every time I walk into a shop I can almost hear my bank balance whimpering "No...stay away from the tartan Maisie...we don't think we'll survive it". Luckily so far I've managed to heed the cry of my debit card and refrain from any huge tartan expenditure. I don't think this inner strength will last long. It's freeeezing in Norwich and I've got my heart set on a tartan winter coat!

Alas, until I find one which will fit my student budget I'm stuck wasting my hours traipsing round shops and scouring ebay. Below I've made a little tartan covered wishlist all of which I'm adding to my 'When I Win The Lottery' list.

Loathe as I am to admit it, it seems summer is coming to an end. As much as I'm gonna miss the light evenings and warm afternoons I will definitely not miss this years summer trends. Crop tops and pastels are not my friends so I can't wait to fill my wardrobe with warm, autumn clothes!

Something I've been seeing a lot of and loving is cut out boots! I really like them, it's a great way to carry on a summer trend throughout the autumn months. Recently I saw a picture of a model wearing some nice cut out boots with a jazzy pair of socks on underneath, I thought this looked great. A really interesting and different way to accessorise.

I'm sure I'm going to have to invest in a pair of cut out boots soon. But luckily for me (and my bank account) there's plenty available on the highstreet. I've found a few that I liked and put them down below but I've also seen some nice ones in Primark (whyyyy don't they have an online shop?!)

My Step-Sister's Wedding | OOTD

I don't normally do OOTD posts (mainly because I spend my life in old jeans and battered t-shirts). Don't know about anyone but my eyes are still reeling from some of the catastrophes that occurred at the MET Ball. I know it's not fair to target a woman who's with child and I hate to jump on a bandwagon but Kim K's dress was just the biggest disaster in upholstery I'd ever seen!

Despite this there were some pretty rocking dresses going on. Ma faaave lady Anne Hathaway looked stunning with her newly bleacher hair, Cara Delevingne looked as punk as she always does and even Sienna Miller left boho behind for the night.

Hot weather and leather are not two things that usually go together but I think this punky, studded, black leather look is gonna stay around for a bit longer and the best thing is it's totes easy to replicate on a budget...

Make It Hightstreet | The Oscars 2013

So the award season is came to a triumphant end with The Oscars. It's really the going out party you could hope for from such a glitzy award season I've had a super time how about you? Of course many of the best dresses were saved til last - Jennifer Lawrence seems to have walked away with an all round thumbs up from the blogosphere for her stunning pale pink Christian Dior Courture gown. For me, Amanda Seyfried in Alexander McQueen really took the biscuit! Her swept back hair and smokey make up was stunning - a million miles away from when she hit the screens as Karen in Mean Girls. Amy Adams in Oscar de la Renta and Sally Fields in Valentino brought a touch of princess to the event with long flowing dresses. With Sofia Vegara missing from the evening due to illness it fell to classic sex-sirens Halle Berry and Catherine Zeta-Jones, plus newcomer Samantha Barks to bring some vavavoom. Halle looked every inch a Bond Girl in a silver sequined Versace number (designed especially for her of course), Ms Zeta-Jones looked classic Hollywood in a gold and nude Zuhair Murad dress and Samantha Barks totally pulled off the plunging neckline in Valentino. The same can't be said for everyone, there were a few dresses that didn't quite knock it out of the park for me. I was a little disappointed with the Jennifer's, both Aniston and Garner went for very simple, slightly bland dresses. Jennifer Garner went for a simple Gucci number which from the back looked exquisitely detailed but from the front just looked a bit meh whilst Jennifer Aniston's red Valentino gown was just...I don't know I just didn't care about it which is probably worse than hating it. Also Adele was back to what she knew best in  black Jenny Packham, I hope she'll branch out into colour again at some point...
On a last note, a lady who has been my favourite all awards season Anne Hathaway. She of course looked beautiful in a soft pink Prada dress with detailed bows at the back and it would have been a perfectly nice dress if I hadn't loved everything else she wore so much! Compare this to her BAFTAs dress or her Screen Actor's Guild Award Dress and it just falls a bit short. But I loved her styling, the hair and the jewels from Tiffany's was all very Audrey Hepburn and went beautifully with her Best Supporting Actress Award...

Make It Highstreet | Brit Awards 2013

Last week the Brits rolled into town highlighting all the awesomeness that is British music (plus a couple from over the pond). To be totally honest I wasn't amazed by the dresses on show. Of course there were a few beauties on show, Taylor Swift, for example, looked absolutely stunning in black paneled Elie Saab - I can't get over how much her style has matured in the last year! Jessie J took the plunge in a low cut Versace gown, a lot more demure than what we're used to seeing Jessie in, I liked it but I'm still a fan of her old trademark bob-and-fringe. I was a bit gutted really that so  many of the big names missed the mark with their dresses, Gemma Arterton, whose dresses I am usually drooling over, looked like she was getting ready for Comic Relief in a red, sequined Jonathan Saunders ensemble. More granny than glamour. Lana Del Rey also disappointed in a thoroughly dull number which I was amazed to discover was by Chanel - considering the amount of designers and stylists that must be lining up to dress this lady I don't understand how she ended up with such a boring dress. Lady of the evening, Emeli Sandé also fell short in a ruffled LBD, just a bit samey really. Not wanting to end on a negative note some ladies definitely brought the vavavoom! Jourdan Dunn worked those pins amazingly in a micro yellow mini from Balmain and Bérénice Marlohe looked every inch a Bond girl in Donna Karan - pure old school Hollywood!

Make It Highstreet | 2013 BAFTAs

I've recently been without computer so sorry that this is a million years late but y'know...thought that counts! Now I don't know about you but when it rains my hair gets remarkably frizzy, my mascara always runs and I slap on the most miserable face you've ever seen! Obviously actors and actresses are made of sterner stuff than me - they all braved the rain, donned the dresses and looked gorgeous (well some of them anyway)! Lots of bright dresses on show with Marion Cotillard in Dior looking like a little ray of sunshine on a horrible London day. I loved Jessica Chastain's mermaid-esque Roland Mouret dress, especially styled with such classic Hollywood hair. Vamp was the order of the day with Jessica Lawrence in Christian Dior, dark make-up and very sleek swept back hair and Thandie Newton in Louis Vuitton. Of course there was also a lot of black dresses on show as is the way with these things, my girl Anne Hathaway (we're destined to be best friends I just know it) looking stunning in embellished black Burberry and pop of pink lipstick.
There weren't any dresses that were a major miss for me. I feel Sarah Jessica Parker tried to step out of her comfort zone with an Ellie Saab jumpsuit but it just ended up looking a bit to casual, not as stand out as we're used to from her. Also, I'm not sure about Paloma Faith's whole look, the dress was pretty but the hair just made it feel a bit try hard and over-the-top...

Make It Highstreet | Screen Actor's Guild Award 2013

I have decided that whilst there is someone as flawless and beautiful as Anne Hathaway in existence I may as well just go into hibernation. Last night she rocked the SAG Awards in a stunning black, Giambattisa Valli gown. With minimal styling (apart from a classic red lip) and a lush pair of Jimmy Choo's - Anne has got this awards malarky down to a tee! I was pleasantly surprised by most of the dresses at the SAG Awards, there weren't really any that disgusted me just some I wasn't so sure about. But first, the good! Nina Dobrev took a leaf out of Lea Michele's book in a hot pink Elie Saab dress which highlighted her crazily skinny frame. Lea Michele also went for hot pink in Valentino, for me personally the length was a bit long and almost aged her but the colour is great on her! Amanda Seyfried looked just as stunning as her Les Mis co-star in a navy Zac Posen strapless gown, I loved the jewellery she wore with this very old school Hollywood. And can I just take a moment to mention my new style crush, Marion Cotillard who went for another slightly out of the box dress this time by Dior and of course looked stunning! I love the dresses she wears to these events she always looks so different and memorable!

As I said there weren't many dresses I detested really just some I wasn't totally sure of. Naya Rivera opted for a sheer paneled Donna Karan dress. Whilst it could have been totally sexy, for some reason it just fell a little short of the mark for me. Leather gowns also featured highly with Jane Lynch (I can't find out who this dress was by) and Julia Bowen in Johanna Johnson, all over leather is never the most flattering look and these ladies are no different. On a last note, I wasn't a fan of Sofia Vegara's make up, a bit too heavy, but the Donna Karan dress and $1 million worth of Neil Lane jewellery more than made up for it...

Make It Highstreet | National Television Awards

It is certainly not the classiest award ceremony of the season and is more likely to attract reality stars that Hollywood ones - but beggars can't be choosers and I am never one to turn down a red carpet. Just because it's not the most prestigious ceremony doesn't mean there weren't some stunning dresses on display! Nicole Scherzinger brought the vava voom by totally disobeying the 'boobs or bum' rule in a low, thigh split black beauty! Tess Daly and Holly Willoughby repped it for yummy mummys everywhere with Tess wearing a floor-length red lace number and Holly flaunting her 'assets' in a black dress which I NEED in my wardrobe soon... However, as is tradition, there were some misses. TOWIE's Lucy Mecklenburgh and Big Fat Gypsy Wedding star Cheyenne Pidgley seemed to be dressed for some kind of cheap prom. I love sequins as much as the next girl but Lucy's navy number was just too much. Also, I have a real problem with Caroline Flack's choices at award ceremonies, I don't think she dresses right for her age at all - her floral dress was really nice but the cut was very similar to Ella Henderson's, who is 17 years her junior, not the right dress for her. I'm undecided about Tulisa's dress, whilst she looked pretty in it, the material looks a bit 'cheap' and the colour made her look a tad orange (although good on her for rocking the spanx)

7 days to go | Winter Warmers

No one told me that Norwich was cold. This meant that when  I got there, bright eyed and bushy tailed, for the beginning of university in September I had packed mainly the wrong clothes! I only had my grandma to thank for the 5 jumpers I had packed - other thank that it was all leggings and t shirts. This meant I had to go out and buy lots of lovely knitwear hats and scarves within my first week. Since then I have developed quite a love for the knitted beanie!

I particularly love the navy, flecked one from New Look below - I think pompoms are the cutest things ever on hats. The same goes for the pastel beanie from ARK. Whilst out on my knitwear purchasing hype I bought an infinity scarf from H&M (the one below is from Asos) and have since converted several of my flatmates to them! No more one-long-ended scarfs or that odd scramble for the other side of your scarf when you're trying to take your coat off in a hurry! Another time saver are the hand warmers being sold by New Look - these are great if, like me, most things you own are touch screen and you don't want to be stuck listening to the cringey music on your iPod whilst hammering your gloved fingers into the screen! Moving onto the fur. I first saw faux fur collars similar to the H&M one below in a video by Sammi aka BeautyCrush and thought they were an awesome alternative to the Peter Pan Collars which were popular this spring! Also, I'm very tempted to forray into the world of earmuffs and these ones from River Island (which are not only ear muffs but bear ears) are too hilarious to not love! Although I have recently been warned to stop buying clothes for comic purposes... hmmm some people are no fun!

8 days to go | LBD

Hear ye hear ye! Let us all gather round and praise the wonders of the LBD! Stuck for outfit ideas for the office christmas party? Trying to one-up the ex at a friends festive bash? Or simply spending a lovely wintery evening with the girls? Then look no further than the LBD!! For those of you who live on mars, the LBD, otherwise known as the Little Black Dress, is the ultimate wardrobe essential for all girls! I commit the cardinal sin of only owning one...but I do wear it constantly!

I love LBDs because they're simple yet usually gorgeous! Also, just because they're a classic doesn't mean they have to be boring. For example, you can go for the classic H&M one shown below which can then be jazzed up with accessories. Or on the other hand go for something completely different such as River Island's baroque take on the LBD! I also really love the galaxy detailing on the collar of the TopShop's dress, although the shape of this probably makes it more of a day time dress. To liven up a little black dress it's all about altered tailoring, cut-outs and mix-match hems! If you ignore the scarily skinny model, Asos's ice-skater style cut-out dress is really pretty and the studding detail on ARK's dress is very 'in' (also it's worth checking this out on the website just to admire the beautiful back-detailing)

Peplum has been a really big trend this year. I really love it because it's what I call a "universal trend"(pantent pending - don't go stealing my pretentious terms). By this I mean it's a trend that can work in so many ways. In the spring it looked gorgeous in floral patterns, in the summer it was great in bold, block colours and now in the winter you can rock it in dark colours or even my beloved sequins! Also, unlike most trends it's one which I feel can suit all body types. If you're a skinny minnie lacking in the curves department the extra material can make you look totally Marilyn Monroe and if you're a curvier girl who has "problem areas" (I hate that term) the shape will help "hide" them (I hate that term too)

Peplum dresses are a go to for the office do. You can where them to work in the day with thick tights and then just remove said tights to party hard afterwards if you don't have time to go home and change. And even if you do then peplums guarantee that you look glam but keep up your smart workwear facade in front of the boss. Two birds one stone.

Oh the weather outside is frightful...

Christmas is without a doubt my favourite time of year! Getting presents: yes, eating crazy amounts of foods: yes, wearing overly-tacky Christmas themed outfits: yes, yes, definitely yes!!
I'm a big fan of the Christmas jumper, in my mind the tackier the better. There is no item of clothing that better combines Christmas cheer with being warm and snuggly. Sequins dresses might be lovely in the candlelight but how warm are those sheer tights actually keeping you?
I actually own 3 jumpers myself, each getting slightly more bizarre. But there are loads available on the high street, they seem to be getting more and more popular. Here's my pick of some of my particular favourites available at the moment;

Make It Highstreet: AMA Sequins

Winter is coming, it's all a bit doom and gloom and we've got a whole month to wait til Christmas! So what better to lighten the mood than a sparkly award show?
Last week the American Music Awards were held in LA and the sparkles were out in force! Everyone from Gwen Stefani to Carly Rae Jepsen was reppin' a bit of glitz and glam! I loved Taylor Swift's Zuhair Murad mini even if it is a little similar to what we've seen her in before...if I had legs like that I'd be working the mini too! The same applies for Stacey Keibler who looked super hot in a super short and embellished Collette Dinnigan, keeping it demure with a high neckline. Also Elisha Cuthbert rocked head to toe sequins but kept it from being disco ball with minimal accessorising and hair. Top class.

To me, sequins are the ultimate winter trend, they come around every year in the build up to Christmas because it's party season and everyone needs cheering up.
